ADUTT 2011

After weeks of chaos the Scout Leaders decided that we would not withdraw the two teams we had entered into this years Thanet District Scouts ADUTT Competition, after all, we had a title to defend!

The ADUTT is the biggest competition that Thanet District Scouts run for the Scouts and Explorers. It’s made up of three competitions, Pioneering, Cooking and the ADUTT (which is a camping competition that they are judged on over the whole weekend). In 2009 we won the cooking and 2010 we won the ADUTT trophy. So with all that had gone on before how would our teams fair in 2011.

Our two teams of five Scouts arrived at 7 o’clock Friday evening and pitched their tents in the dark ready for the start of the competition at 7:30 Saturday morning (parent’s, we thought you would prefer the Friday night to an early Saturday morning).

Saturday morning they collect the rest of their kit from the trailer and setup their site. They set up fire and chopping areas, make camp gadgets and gateways and decorated the site.

First up was the Pioneering Competition, they were given a bag of poles and ropes and a set of instructions and everyone builds the same thing. This year it was a zig zag wash stand. Once built they are then left until the judging Sunday morning. 14th Broadstairs – Team Bravo (Ryan, Aidan, Jake, Sam and Ryan) took 2nd place with 14th Broadstairs – Team Alpha (Alex, Charlotte, Lucy, Nathan and Rhys) taking 1st place.

Next up was the cooking, they had to cook a three course meal over an open wood fire. This years theme was red and green. Every course had to have something red and green in it and had to come from a country that had red and green in it’s flag!

First for both teams was Welsh Salmon and Prawn Fishcakes with a Mint dip. This was followed by Portugeese Chicken and Peas for Team Bravo and Portugeese Chilli for Team Alpha. Desert was Mexican Strawberry and Mascarpone Quesadillas for Team Bravo (well that was what it was meant to be, not sure what happened, think they may have eaten the Strawberries for tea on Saturday!!) and Mexican Tortilla Layer Cake for Team Alpha. They are not scored on just the food they are also scored on how well the clean up afterwards, all pots and pans need to be sparkling. In another close run contest Team Alpha again took 1st place.

Two first places and a second place so far, what amazing results.

Finally the ADUTT competition, this is judged over the whole weekend. They are scored on their teamwork, how clean their site is, how tidy their tents are, the camp gadgets and gateways they made, pitching a patrol tent, do they get their site cleared down in the required time and is the site left spotless. Again this was a close contest, and again Team Alpha took 1st place.

Wow, a clean sweep, not sure it’s been done before. It was an amazing effort by both Teams and we are incredibly proud of every one of them.

It was a whole Troop effort that got them through as just about everyone did something towards it. The ten Scouts that made up the Teams did their bit over the weekend at Port Regis and over the Competition weekend. All the other Scouts made Bunting and decorations for their sites, the Leaders planned menus, did the weekend at Port Regis so they could practice fires, axe and saw, patrol tents, etc (even if it was their birthday, Happy Birthday Braces) they were still running around Friday getting shopping.

A huge, huge well done to everyone, when we all work together look what happens!!

Next up is the Marathon Hike Challenge (we currently hold the trophy from last year) then it’s the National Pedal Car Olympics at Thriftwood. We have had third place for the last two years, and who knows this time, with the power of 14th behind them anything is possible!

Team Bravo, Team Alpha, we salute you.
