Scouts – Survival Camp

This weekend the Scouts held another Survival Camp. After tents up (too cold for hammocks) it was collect firewood, they would be needing a lot as it was stew for dinner and it would need to be on for hours.

It was then onto the first challenge of the day, fire lighting. Not as easy as they thought. They each had to light a small fire and had to keep it going for 5 minutes. They were given one small cotton wool ball (though this ended up being about a dozen in some cases) and a fire steel. Biggest problem is trying not to smash the fire you have just built to bits when using the fire steel. They all managed it in the end but George was the star with his lighting first time and it was still going after half an hour.

Lunch was noodles cooked on the Trangia’s. After washing up it was time to prepare the game stew for dinner. We cheated a bit this time and bought diced veg for the stew as this would give us more time to prepare the meat! Once again Gadget came up trumps and produced 4 Rabbits and 6 Pheasants for the stew. After skinning the Rabbits they remove the breast fillets from the Pheasants, diced them and in the pot. That was left on the fire for about 3 hours.

With the stew taking a while it was time for a snack, survival camp style! Gadget produced 30 Wood Pigeons. The Scouts and 2 Beavers that had popped along!!!! proceeded to pluck and fillet them all before frying them over the fire for Pigeon Burgers.

Once dinner was out of the way the Scouts disappeared for a few games of man hunt. Up bright and early Sunday morning they got the fire going again ready for breakfast of egg, bacon, sausage and a fried slice. It was then onto Paracord Survival bracelets, again not as easy as it looks, wonder if Point 5 has finished his one yet?. After lunch it was pack everything away, tents down and leave the site like we had never been there.

Another great weekend, well done all the Scouts that took part.
