Porchlight / Gap Project

This term the Cubs and Scouts have been learning about the plight of the homeless.

The Scouts took part in the recent Kent Scouts Initiative to sleep out in cardboard boxes whilst raising money for Porchlight.   We are pleased to confirm that the Scouts raised just over £350.00 for this national charity. The Cubs carried out a small coin collection in Smartie Tubes (after having enjoyed the smarties).  They in turn raised approximately £110.00.

The Cubs  were able to make up some Xmas toiletry gift bags (which included a Christmas Sweet treat) and these were donated to the Gap Project in Broadstairs, along with some sleeping bags.

The cubs were able to make up 30 bags which included toothbrush, toothpaste, hand sanitisers, tissues, cleaning wipes and  lipbalm. The Gap Project runs a drop in centre 3 times a week for the homeless to receive a hot meal and have a shower. They work with Porchlight and other organisations.

During the presentation the Cubs were informed about the winter churches project which will open their doors to provide overnight shelter for the homeless of Thanet.

The Gap Project were over the moon with the donation and praised the Cubs and Scouts for being so thoughtful.   Their overall message was that the Cubs and Scouts will have made a difference to someone’s life.

As a result of this term long project the Cubs and Scouts have been awarded their Community Impact badges.
