Cubs – Bear Survival Camp

This weekend 12 of our Cubs took part in the District Bear Survival Camp.

Friday night they started with a hike around Minster and the surrounding area. Think it started as a hike around Minster but Akela Wolves (our ADC Cubs) proved his map skills still need a bit of work! They eventually got back to camp and it was hot chocolate then bed.

Saturday saw the cubs making survival boxes, strikers, balusters and of course, survival bracelets. The Cubs backwoods cooked some chocolate orange cakes and saw a demonstration of how to clean and gut a fish, then steam it in newspaper on the hot embers. During the afternoon we had a flypast from some of the planes from the Air Show and had the Orient Express go past on the railway line! We also had a visit from ACC-Cubs who seemed impressed with the shelters the Cubs were making during the evening. We had a campfire that Akela Wolves lit with just one strike. Clearly he’s better at lighting fires than reading maps! New songs were taught and learnt, sketches were performed, eggs were smashed and water was thrown (over Lucy). The fire died down and the Cubs were drinking hot chocolate before going to bed.

Sunday morning, we managed to pack away dry tents and we had our Cubs Own in the quiet zone. After lunch we had archery, whilst around the campfire circle the Cubs practised making fire with their new strikers.

Well done to the Cubs and Leaders that survived!

A huge thank you to Akela Wolves for organising the camp.
