Cubs Farm to Fork

The Pack recently visited Tesco at Westwood to complete the new badge. This involves learning about where your food comes from. The Pack were divided into small groups and given bright coloured tabards and a question sheet each.     They were then taken to different areas around the store.   One group started with the behind the scenes tour including where the food is stored, how and when it is delivered. They enjoyed using the lorry lifts and finally to check out the temperatures in the freezer. All agreed it was very very cold at minus 26.8!

From there the Cubs visited the deli where they tasted cheeses from different regions and made from various milk including goat and mixed with different herbs.   Then it was onto the fruit and vegetables and they were set a challenge to find the produce that has travelled the furthest to reach the UK and to name some exotic fruits.     Difficulties arose when trying to work out if the produce was a root, bush or tree plant.

Breads were next and the different types of cereals and flour used and finally onto fish which caused the most fun.   The Cubs were again challenged to handle wet fish, shellfish including salmon, squid, crab and shrimps.

The evening was rounded off with a question and answer session followed by drinks and pancakes and fruit tasting. The chocolate pancakes and strawberries were the favourites.

Thank you to Tesco Community staff for giving up their time and making a very enjoyable evening. The Cubs will follow this up later in the term with healthy lifestyle choices.
